Reading logs

Reading logs or journals are great ways of reacting to what has been read. We can find out how students feel about about the characters and plot, and their overall impression of the book or story. The best part: sharing with others and encouraging them to read!

I chose the book A lion to Guard Us, written by Clyde Robert Bulla.  I think it is very interesting and I liked it very much.  It’s about a man, James Freebold, who left London and went to Virginia looking for a job.  He left his wife, two daughters and son in London.  His wife died and Amanda, the oldest, had to take care of her sister Meg and brother Jemmy.

The three children went on a journey to Virginia to find their father.  On the journey they had many adventures, but finally the arrived to Virginia just to find out that their father had died.

I chose A Lion to Guard Us. The author is Clyde Robert Bulla.  I liked it because it tells you how life was in those times and about migration.

Alfonso K.

I chose A Lion to Guard Us, written by Clyde Robert Bulla.  I liked this book because it was a very emotional book.

Gustavo M.

I chose The Lungs of the Earth, the story of Chico Mendes.  It is about a man who risked his life to save the most important rain forest in the world, the Amazons.  I think the story is very nice and interesting.

Natalia B.

The Lungs of the Earth is a story about a man called Chico Mendes.  He lived in the Amazon in Brazil.  Chico wanted to defend the forest but he could only do it with the help of his family and friends. They made human chains to stop the destruction.  But one day a cattle rancher, Darci Alves da Silva, killed him because Chico didn’t want him to have property in the rain forest.

I liked the story because I think Chico was right.  It is very important to defend the forest because animals live there and also people, also because it gives us oxygen.

Manuela P.

I liked reading A Lion to Guard Us because it has to do with some of the topics we are learning in History class and because I like reading out loud with my classmates.

Chloe A.

The story I liked was The Lungs of the Earth.  The author is John Mundahl. As we learnt in class, the Amazons is a very important place for humans because it is a rainforest full of trees and species.  The trees give us oxygen and without that, we can{t live!

Chico Mendes lived in the Amazon and loved his home.  He shared it with hundreds of different species.  One day, the government decided to cut some trees from the Amazon. For Chico and the animals, this spelled disaster. Chico tried to defend himself and talked to many people who lived there. He fought the government and thanks to him, we have many protected areas in the rain forest.

Thank you Chico!

Lucia V.

I chose A Lion to Guard Us.  The story is about three kids who live in London with their mother and their dad lives in Virginia.  The mom worked as a maid and their dad was building homes in the New World.

Suddenly their mom got really ill and died.  The kids decided to go to the New World to look for their father.  I really liked this story because I didn’t know what would happen next so I was anxious to know what happened to the kids.

Nicolas S.

We read a story in class about Chico Mendes.  He lived in the Amazons with other people; it was a very quiet place where you could only hear the sounds of the animals.

One day the government came and told them they were going to build a road so they paid people to leave the rainforest.  But Chico and some other people decided to stay.

Chico organized people and organized blockades for 13 years.  He went to the city to talk to the Government. When he went back to the rain forest, a man who hated him killed him.

I liked this story very much because although a man killed Chico, he defended the rainforest and protected it.

Federico D.

The poem I liked is called Our Land will Not be Sold. It was written by a Native American.  I liked it because it was short and interesting.  The text is about the Europeans that wanted to buy the land from the natives and they offered them a lot of money.  Native Americans answered “no” and told them to burn all their money.  Why did they say no? Because they believed the Great Spirit had given them to land, for everyone to work and live. At the same time, they considered the Europeans not to be the natural owners of the land. It has no owners and it cannot be sold!

The “ABC for a Great Year”

The year has begun! Here are some tips and ideas we spoke about in class that will help us have A GREAT YEAR.

After reading and discussing, students made their own versions of an “ABC for a Great Year” and thought of ways of making these ideas actually happen in our classroom.

“Oh, the places you’ll go”

We read the book by Dr. Seuss which talks about the magical journey of life and the choices and challenges we will have to face on a daily basis.  Being in Form VI is the beginning of a great journey and students talked about the challenges and goals they have for the year.

“Butterfly Circus”

We watched the short film “The Butterfly Circus” which shows one man’s struggle and how he overcomes difficulties although he is severely handicapped.  One quote we particularly liked was:

“The greater the struggle, the more glorious the triumph.”

Students then made their own butterflies and wrote some inspirational quotes they got from the film.

Welcome Back to school!!

  • Form VI staff is ready to begin a new journey with their kids! We are sure you, kids, will fin
d it excitingand enjoyable as well as challenging! This new journey you are about to start will lead you to amazing destinations. That's why we want to welcome you with this image; we will work on it on the very first week of class!

  • Since our school's motto this year is"Service to community" we have selected this brave woman as an example of someone who worked hard to serve her community and, thus, to help building a better world. We will learn about her and the significance of every choice she made in life. If you already feel curious about her way of helping her people, read the following extract and feel free to share your comments with us on the very first week of class!
  • Harriet Tubman was born a slave on a plantation in Maryland. Historians think she was born in 1820, or possibly 1821, but birth records weren't kept by most slave owners. Her birth name was Araminta Ross, but she took the name of her mother, Harriet, when she was thirteen. Life as a slave was difficult. In 1849 Harriet decided to escape. She would use the Underground Railroad. After a long and scary trip she made it to Pennsylvania and was finally free.
Harriet became famous as an Underground Railroad conductor. She led nineteen different escapes from the south and helped around 300 slaves to escape. She became known as "Moses" because, like the Moses in the Bible, she led her people to freedom.
Harriet was truly brave. She risked her life and freedom to help others. She also helped her family, including her mother and father, to escape. She was never caught and never lost a slave. After the Civil War, Harriet lived in New York with her family. She helped poor and sick people. She also spoke out on equal rights for blacks and women. She has been an inspiration for people and we hope she will inspire you all, too.
